In the last story we found out that Athina had a superpower with animals and that she loved Free’s sense of humor. Athina’s dad wasn’t so mean, and the lady with the dogs was going to bake them something special. Let’s start where we left off.

Free asked if she really wouldn't be afraid of a lion and she shook her head and said no way. He asked what would she do if they ran into a monkey. She laughed and said that she would hide behind him.
He wondered if he was afraid of monkeys.
He read if a monkey bites someone they have to get a bunch of injections which does not sound fun at all. Free wasn’t afraid of animals because he liked to study them. He wasn’t a natural animal person like Athina.
Athina was always smiling and happy. Free was more serious but never bored and always happy inside. He was also very funny. They were 100% happy when together. Both of their parents noticed this and felt good about them hanging out.
About a week later the lady gave each family a bunch of cupcakes. They were red, orange, yellow, pink, white and of course chocolate. Each was yummy and tasty. The families had a little party and drank tea and ate cupcakes.
They talked about which was the best and could not agree. Which do you think you would like the best? It is so hard to choose.
The dads agreed it was the red ones which were cherry. The moms agreed the pink ones were the best. The kids both liked the chocolate ones the best. They all thought this was funny!
Since the families liked and trusted the other family, the kids asked and were allowed to go on a big hike and picnic to a waterfall far into the forest. Athina and Free were so excited to be able to have an adventure and to be alone just like grown-ups.
This was so exciting! They carefully made lists of things to bring, food to prepare, and things they would need for safety. In case of any emergency, they wanted to be prepared.
They also decided to act like animals since they were in the wild. Athina chose to be a lion since she had big hair. CrazyHotBoy decided to be a Giraffe since he was tall and had a long neck. This was going to be so much fun! They counted the days until they could go.
Athina’s dad drove them and Free’s dad would pick them up. They would be in the woods for about 6 hours. They had to hike for 2 hours to there, 2 hours back, and had 2 hours to eat and enjoy the scenery.
The day came and it was beautiful day. Luckily not many people were out that day because it was mid-week. A Wednesday which is a day most people do not go hiking. Not having many people around made it even more exciting.
They put on their backpacks and headed off into the forest. The dad watched as the kids disappeared. He was worried. Of course he was worried. He is a dad.
Free’s mom called him times to ask about them.
Free and Athina didn’t think even one time about the parents.
They walked on a pretty good trail at times crossing small streams by stepping on big rocks and walking on bridges made of a fallen tree. There were birds and insects making noise.
The tall trees made it shady and even dark as they climbed higher and higher. As they walked the trees became thinner and the forest had less plants. It was rocky and they could begin to see big mountains.
This was the most beautiful place they had ever been. They noticed that their phones no longer had service. They hadn’t thought of this but felt it was okay. Why would a giraffe and a lion need a phone?
Finally, they got to an open area and saw the waterfalls. It was very tall and looked so powerful and beautiful falling from the rocky mountain.
They found a flat rock big enough to sit on and began their picnic. They were tired and very hungry. They ate and didn’t talk much until they stopped being so hungry. Hiking up the mountain was tiring.
Thy had not realized but they heard sounds that were scary. CrazyHotBoy knew what they were. They were screaming monkeys. Sounded scary but they were not a problem except for the very noisy and scary yelling they did. There must have been many of them. They were so loud!
They were sure the forest up there was full of all sorts of creatures.
They weren’t afraid of animals.
All of a sudden,
It became very quiet.
Silent…
They sat up straight and did not make a sound.
They looked around to try and find why all the animals stopped talking.
They saw the reason..... looked at each other, but did not speak.
They were scared....
